Two Story Rear Addition
Challenge
This existing frame house had a small, cramped kitchen with one small window and an inadequate rear porch structure. There wasn’t a bathroom or closet on the first floor and the growing family needed more bedroom space. The family wanted a connection to the backyard, but did not want a deck to fill the rear open space. The husband wanted a workshop with a tall ceiling and a way to move materials in and out of his wood shop.
Solution
The new rear addition became the kitchen on the first floor, a spacious room for guests to gather and be entertained while food was being prepared. Large windows at the corner of the room provide a visual connection to the backyard, but the Owners wanted a patio at ground level for privacy. A powder room and closet were added next to the kitchen, connected to a new side entry.
The second floor addition is the Master Bedroom Suite, with a new walk-in closet. Space was rearranged on the second floor to enlarge the existing bedrooms. The basement floor was lowered at the rear addition for a woodworking shop, and two doors on the side allow materials to be directly moved in and out.
