Elmhurst Bungalow Addition

Elmhurst Bungalow Addition

Challenge

A young family wanted to purchase the bungalow the husband grew up in, but add more bedrooms.  There were two bedrooms on the first floor and a small bedroom in the attic.  The existing bathroom in the attic was small and cramped.

The kitchen size was adequate, but the Owners wanted an island and more counter space.  The current stairway location limited the options in the kitchen and was not integrated into the rest of the house.

Solution

The stairs were relocated to the front bedroom area and a small sitting area was created.  Walls were opened up to have the space flow better in the living/ dining/ and stair hall.

Additional kitchen cabinets and counters were added on the wall where the stairs used to be.  A large island with storage was added  and the wall between the kitchen and dining room was opened up.

Two bedrooms and a master bathroom was added to the second floor.  The original bedroom was maintained.  The Master Bedroom had sliding glass doors and a Juliette balcony on the south wall.
